  ASSOCIATION OF SECRETARIES

Tyne and Wear Branch

PRESIDENT:    Christine Morgan   - This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

The Association was founded in 1979 and from those early beginnings, there are currently eleven branches across the UK.

The aim of the Association is to learn from each other, receive practical advice from prominent speakers and create useful and supportive networks.  We also enjoy a full social calendar.  Charity fundraising has always been important to the Association and we choose a local charity to support each year.

The Tyne and Wear branch was one of the first to open and continues to be one of the best supported.  We have over 50 members from all types of jobs, some of whom are now retired.

Over the past 30 years, the secretarial profession has changed beyond all recognition but the Association is proud of its history and we have kept our traditional title although our members now include administrators, office managers, executive assistants and all types of what we should really call “office professionals”.  We hope that the name “Secretaries” is not deterring prospective members because they are not strictly “secretaries” in the old meaning of the word.

We meet in Newcastle on the first Monday of the month and often have visits to hotels in the middle of the month.  This enables us to recommend hotels to our bosses because we have visited them and have eaten their delicious food.  Our annual fees are £12 for employed members and £7 for unwaged.  We also pay a nominal sum at each visit which goes into our charity fund.

In October this year, the Tyne and Wear branch is hosting the Annual Convention where members from all of the branches get together.  The event will be centred on Durham and we are honoured to have been offered a Civic Reception by the Mayor of Durham on the Friday evening.  We will have the Convention with excellent speakers followed by the formal Dinner on the Saturday.  On the Sunday, we hope to have a tour of Durham Castle and there will then be the opportunity for delegates to attend a service in Durham Cathedral.

We are actively recruiting new members and would be delighted to welcome you as a guest to one of our monthly meetings so that you can decide for yourself whether you would like to join us.

If you would like to join us, please contact me.  You will be made to feel very welcome.

With best wishes and I hope to see you soon.
